Chongqing's new airport site selection is progressing as scheduled, which means Chengdu and Chongqing are pushing forward of co-building a world-class airport cluster and an international air gateway hub.

International air (freight) hub

The city's new airport is positioned as "an important part of Chongqing's international air hub, a regional hub airport and a freight hub" to promote the sound development of both the supply and demand of air transport in the Chengdu-Chongqing region and fully tap the demand potential of the air transport market, especially the freight market.

Building an international air (freight) hub is essential for creating an international comprehensive transport hub.

It is also mentioned in the document on the 2021 municipal major early-stage projects announced in March that the construction of the new airport, including 3-4 runways of 3,200-3,800 meters, terminals, and supporting facilities, will be commenced as soon as possible and is expected to be completed in 2029.

The planning outline for the construction of the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle proposes that Chongqing and Chengdu should strengthen their functions as an international logistics hub and build an international freight center.

West China international comprehensive transport hub

Chongqing's new airport, whose construction is about to start this year, is expected to reach an annual throughput of 70 million passengers and 3.5 million-ton freight.

At present, Chongqing is accelerating the construction of a west China international comprehensive transport hub and international gateway hub and further improving the creation of the opening-up system in the city.

Chongqing will be more closely connected with the world through the new airport's coordination and linkage with other great open channels, such as China Railway Express (Yuxinou), New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor, China-Singapore (Chongqing) Demonstration Initiative on Strategic Connectivity, and the golden waterway of the Yangtze River.
