Chongqing welcomes an independent bookstore named "One Book One Week Store", which opened on April 16 at Jiulong Ecool, a cultural and creative project in Jiulongpo District, Chongqing Municipality.
One Book One Week Store at Jiulong Ecool, a cultural and creative project in Jiulongpo District, Chongqing.
It is the second store of One Book One Week Store in China, following the first one in Tianjin, which was opened last May through crowdfunding.
One Book One Week Store sells only one book each week, hence the name. Besides, it is operated in a way totally different from traditional bookstores. As media is going digital quickly, One Book One Week Store hopes to rekindle people's love for reading printed books and offline cultural activities. Its biggest selling point is selling only one book every week and decorating the whole space around the book's theme.
Why choose Chongqing for the second store? "Chongqing is home to diverse independent bookstores and private art galleries, and it enjoys a great atmosphere for culture and art," said the bookstore owner.
He added that author conversation salons, book releases, culture and art space exhibitions, readers' sharing sessions, and other activities would be held regularly, offering more diverse reading experiences for people.
The bookstore invited Chen Ying, a Ph.D. in linguistics, an Italian professor, and a famous translator on an opening day. She translated the Neapolitan Quartet books, including My Brilliant Friend, Frantumaglia, The Lying Life of Adults, and other books. She brought her new translation work and discussed literature, reading, travel, and other topics with readers.
In the future, it will team up with Jiulong Ecool to organize book signing sessions, neighborhood reading meetings, and other activities around books and publications. And it is expected to be a cultural exchange platform for residents of nearby communities and a cultural center.
