Chongqing Debuts at BIEA International Youth STEM Innovation Competition

Chongqing- On May 24, the 2022-2023 International Youth STEM Innovation Competition hosted by the British International Education Association was officially launched in the Houses of Parliament in London. The theme of this competition is Greening cities, Sustaining lives. As the only selected subject city in Asia, Chongqing made its debut at the opening ceremony.

In his keynote speech, Kevin Austin, Vice President of C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, mentioned the achievements of Chongqing's development and the challenges that Chongqing's special geographical environment poses to urban development. As one of the partners, Chongqing's city promotional videos attracted attention as they were broadcast during the opening ceremony. This series of promotional videos were produced by Chongqing International Communication Center, including "In less than a Century, Chongqing Achieved Bridge Capital of China," "Chongqing's Rail: Your Ticket To The Future," and "Chongqing: A Path to a Greener Future." As a representative of Chongqing, Catherine Chen, the editor-in-chief of Chongqing International Communication Center, introduced the general situation of Chongqing and its efforts in sustainable development through online video and invited young contestants from all over the world to give suggestions on the sustainable development of Chongqing.

In July this year, the competition will officially announce other subject cities, and the sustainable urban development of Chongqing will be used as the subject for global young people to study. From June 2022, the competition will hold forums for students in many cities worldwide, and from November, the forums will be held in many world-renowned universities. The preliminary round of the competition will start at the end of 2022, and the finals and awards ceremony will be held in July 2023. The competition site in the Chinese region will be set up in the Chongqing International Communication Center, and the finals will be held simultaneously with the London site.

At the opening ceremony, Rt Hon Marcus Fysh MP, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Education, delivered a commencement speech. Chen Sun, Co-CEO of the British International Education Association, Maria Charalambides from Imperial College, Climate Centre, Kevin Austin, Vice President of C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, and Thandiwe Banda, Head of Science at the Beacon School, delivered keynote speeches on education and impact, climate change, urban sustainability, education, and a sustainable future. This competition also invited Baroness Hooper, British Prime Minister's Special Envoy, to attend the event. Brendan Wignall, chairman of the British International Education Association, announced the launch of the 2022-2023 International Youth STEM Innovation Competition.

This competition is open to young people aged 6 to 18 around the world, encouraging them to think constructively from the perspective of sustainable urban development, learn ESG (environment, society, and governance), and position their development at the forefront of green development.

London (England), Lagos (Nigeria), Nassau (Bahamas), Valencia (Spain), and Bogota (Colombia) are also the subject cities of this competition. The competition has issued an invitation to sign up for young people aged 6-18 around the world. Teams from 30 countries and regions have registered, including the UK, China, Pakistan, UAE, India, South Korea, Malaysia, Nigeria, and Italy.
