Exhibition in His Living Room, Telling Stories of a Metropolis

By XINYI LI|Jul 05,2022

75-year-old Wang Qingmin, who lives in No. 25 Daijia Lane in Yuzhong District, has lived in Chongqing for decades. Now he is hosting a small exhibition called "Old Folk House" in his living room to welcome visitors from all over the world and tell them stories of Chongqing's past and present.

"This street used to be called Xiangshui Shuncheng Street when it received a large number of visitors every day!" Wang has lived here since childhood. In recent years, Daijia Lane has attracted a growing number of tourists. A young man once asked him, "Why is it called Daijia (literally Dai's house) Lane? Is it because there are many residents with the surname Dai?"

The exhibition was held in the residential building (Photo provided to iChongqing)

Wang realized that, as an old resident of Chongqing and Yuzhong District, he was obligated to tell more people about the history of Chongqing. Fortunately, he lives on the first floor, which offers great convenience for an exhibition. So he collected the photos of Chongqing taken by his son Wang Xiang, a photographer, and went to the library to collect more materials. He printed dozens of old photographs of Chongqing, all of which were hung in his living room to show the old and new looks of Chongqing to the public.

Although the exhibition area is less than 20 square meters, it is an excellent place to learn about the history of Chongqing. Standing in front of the huge drawing of the "Yucheng (old name of Chongqing) Map", Wang described to visitors the scenes of the wharf a hundred years ago: "Look! The large and small wooden boats were sailing on the Chuanjiang River, ancient city gates on the shore, stilted buildings made of bamboo and wood on the cliff, porters at the Chaotianmen Dock, peddlers carrying loads, and laborers who waited for customers. Isn't it like the Chongqing version of Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival?"

Wang said affectionately, "after so many years, the mountain and river remain the same. But with time, the Mountain City has undergone great changes!"

In this "private exhibition hall", visitors can find old photos of ships of Minsheng Company, rickshaws of Jiefangbei, trackers on the Xiajiang River, as well as images of today's majestic bridge, magnificent sunrise and running light rail train. Wang said that an average of more than 20 people visit here every day. As a volunteer guide, he will answer their questions and recommend the most enchanting scenic spots in Mountain City to them. Wang said he would continue to hold this exhibition to call for more attention to Chongqing.
