Keep Our Eyes on the Forefront and Go Ahead | Delegate Story

By ZHAN CHEN|May 29,2022

Chongqing- The intelligent green technology in Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality saw fruitful results in recent years. Preoccupied with issues of basic research, scientific and technological innovation, talent training, and intellectual property rights, Chongqing's scientific researchers strive to lead high-quality development with innovation.

The 6th Chongqing Municipal Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) opened on May 27 and will last for five days, where they will discuss five-year economic and social development goals as well as policy initiatives.

At the forefront of new materials

"In the new materials field, we are at the same starting line as western countries," said Shi Haofei, a research fellow at the Chongqing Institute of Green and Intelligent Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences.  Shi, also director of the micro-nano manufacturing and system integration research center of the Chongqing Institute, added, "We must keep our eyes on the forefront and go ahead, making better graphene materials for the country."

Majoring in photovoltaic technology, Shi went to the United States for postdoctoral research and was exposed to a kind of new material: graphene. At that time, the University of Manchester scientists had discovered the excellent mechanical, thermal, optical, and electrical properties of graphene materials, which would bring disruptive changes to the sectors of electronic information and energy.

Since then, Shi has decided to engage in graphene material research. In 2013, Shi led his team to develop the country's first 15-inch monolayer graphene. And in April 2022, Shi's team made another breakthrough in graphene's growth on non-single-crystal substrates, which prompts a more efficient and less costly output of high-quality graphene materials.

In his view, the scientific and technological workers should care about their families and country. Being immersed in graphene research for many years, Shi has promoted the application of graphene materials in high-tech fields.

Furthermore, he has undertaken important national research and development programs to tackle key technologies, focusing on the problems of high power consumption, high cost, and low intelligence due to materials.

China's prefabricated food capital

As the key grain-producing region in the country, Liangping District, Chongqing, has promoted new industrialization, leading to high-quality development with scientific and technological innovation.

Worth 20 billion yuan of agricultural products output value, Liangping takes the lead in building China's (Western) prefabricated food capital based on natural resources and industrial foundation. By 2025, the prefabricated food industrial park area will reach 15 square kilometers, with the industrial chain's annual output value exceeding 50 billion yuan.

Xie Wenjiang, a delegate to the 6th CPC Chongqing Municipal Congress from Liangping District, is the one who worked on the prefabricated food industry research institute. "Innovation is the first driving force to lead development," he said. Next, Xie will make efforts to create a national high-tech zone in Liangping and build the capital of prefabricated food in China.

Innovation achievements will enable high-quality development, and Xie will strive for scientific and technological innovation to boost Liangping's economic and social development.
