Chongqing- "After five years of persistent efforts, Chongqing has undergone exciting and profound changes," said Li Mingqing, deputy secretary and spokesperson of the Chongqing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, at a press conference on June 1. "Economic development has achieved an overall transformation from high-speed growth to high-quality development. People's lives have achieved a historical transition from piecemeal prosperity to moderate prosperity throughout the country."

The Sixth Chongqing Municipal Congress of the CPC saw a successful conclusion on May 31, with different agendas completed in the joint efforts of all the delegates.

The press conference involved listening to and reviewing the report of the Fifth Chongqing Municipal Committee of the CPC, reviewing the work report of the Fifth Committee of the Chongqing Municipal Discipline Inspection Committee of the CPC, electing new members of the Sixth Chongqing Municipal Committee of the CPC and that of the Sixth Committee of the Chongqing Municipal Discipline Inspection Committee of the CPC, and representatives of Chongqing to the upcoming 20th National Congress of the CPC.

What will Chongqing do in the next five years?

"(We will) put people first so we can be invincible, " said Li. "Only hard work can bear heavy responsibilities."

The conference set the goals for Chongqing's development in the next five years, including three major tasks of promoting high-quality development and creating high-quality life, building the city into a pioneer of opening up in inland China and a place with lush mountains and lucid rivers, as well as continuing to construct the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle.

Chongqing will strive to achieve six goals, including significant improvement in economic strength, scientific and educational strength, comprehensive urban strength, ecological civilization construction level, social governance level, and people's living standards.

Among the 11 key measures for the next five years of work, the report proposes to further promote the optimization and upgrading of industries and continuously strengthen the real economy; to further promote innovation and development, and accelerate the creation of a nationally influential science and technology center; to further promote all-round cooperation between Sichuan and Chongqing, and jointly build the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle; to deepen the promotion of urban renewal and the coordinated development of "one area two clusters;" to further promote rural revitalization, and draw a new picture of urban-rural integrated development.

Additionally, the report also emphasizes the need to further promote high-level reform and opening-up to stimulate the vitality of high-quality development; to further promote green development, and build an important ecological barrier in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River; to further improve people's livelihood and effectively encourage common prosperity through high-quality development; to promote cultural prosperity and development, building a culturally advanced city; to further promote the modernization of social governance, and to focus on providing a higher-level and safe city; to further promote the construction of democracy and the rule of law, gathering the wisdom of all parties extensively.
