China's First Dual-powered Tram Line Coming to Chongqing

Chongqing- The opening of China's first dual-powered tram -- Jiangtiao line, marks the operation of Chongqing's first urban (suburban) railway and builds a city with a robust transportation network, creating a metropolitan on the rail and forming a one-hour commute circle.

Jiangtiao line stretches 28.2 kilometers from Tiaodeng Station of CRT Line 5 and ends at Jiangjin Binjiang New City, spanning Dadukou District, Chongqing High-Tech Industry Development Zone, and Jiulongpo District. The whole line has seven stations, all of which are elevated stations. It will be integrated with Line 5 in the future.

Highway traffic is the main form of transportation between the central urban area and the new area. With the construction of the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle, highways can no longer accommodate the demand.

Urban (suburban) railways underpin modern metropolitan areas. World-renowned metropolitan areas such as Tokyo, Paris, and London have built several times larger urban (suburban) railway networks than the urban rail transit network, enabling one-hour commutes between the metropolitan area and its surroundings.

Two bridges are like dancing ballet

On August 28, 2021, two bridges with a length of 90 meters and a weight of about 4,500 tons completed a 98-degree clockwise turn in 2 hours and 30 minutes. The radius of the swivel is only 350 meters, setting a new record for the smallest swivel radius of a railway bridge in Chongqing.

The two Jiangtiao line bridges span the Chongqing-Guiyang high-speed railway, with a horizontal distance of only 8.8 meters and a minimum vertical distance of 2 meters. Moreover, the construction site of the two bridges is highly narrow due to their proximity to two high-voltage transmission lines.

According to the relevant person in charge of China Construction Sixth Engineering Bureau, they first built the bridges parallel to the Chongqing-Guiyang high-speed railway to minimize the impact of construction on the surrounding area. "After completion, we turned the two bridges nearly perpendicular to the railway. So there was a spectacle of two bridges dancing ballet."

The Jiangtiao line adopts various black technologies as China's first dual-powered line.

The power supply system automatically converts when the tram runs in the AC (Alternating Current)-DC (Direct Current) conversion section between Jiulongyuan Station and Shilinsi Station. Due to two power supply systems and an AC-DC conversion system on the top of the tram. 

France, Russia, the United States, and other European and American countries use multi-powered locomotives, but the tram needs to stop first to achieve AC-DC conversion.

According to the relevant person in charge of Chongqing City Transportation Development and Investment Group Co., Ltd., the Jiangtiao line can automatically complete AC-DC conversion while running, which is its biggest highlight. This technology not only fills the technical gap in China but is also at the top level in the world.

User-friendly black technologies

Jiangtiao line tram has been upgraded to contain 2,322 passengers, a 15% capacity increase compared to CRT Line 1 and 6. Dynamic systems are independent for each compartment. During a power outage in one compartment, the others can take it back to the garage to enable self-rescue.

The air-conditioning outlets are arranged on both sides of the roof, and a row of small scattered air outlets at the top of the tram to improve passenger comfort. Acoustic design has been integrated into the creation process, and noise reduction has been optimized comprehensively.

The Passenger Information System can display three colors, red, yellow, and green, according to the congestion of the tram carriage. Red means crowded, yellow means slightly crowded, and green means not crowded.

"Besides the straddle-type monorail, the Chongqing rail transit industry has another competitive product. Especially during the construction of the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle, the new urban (suburban) railway model will strengthen the Chongqing rail transit industry," said a relevant person in charge of the Chongqing Economic and Information Technology Commission.
